Young doctors resume strike, submit resignations


The young doctors have once again withdrew their services from Outpatient departments, indoor patient departments and elective operation theatres lists in all public sectors hospitals of the province from Friday after receiving a ‘strange’ and cold response from Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif Thursday night.

The Young Doctors Association Punjab has called off strike after 31 days in the evening on Thursday when senior advisor to CM Zulfiqar Khosa informed the YDA representatives that the Punjab CM has agreed to accept demands of the YDA and would meet YDA office-bearers from all cities of the province Thursday night.

The YDA office-bearers rushed to Lahore to see the CM but after waiting for two hours outside his office, they were informed that “the CM does not want to meet the YDA representatives as he is angry with them,” said Chairman YDA Punjab Dr Muhammad Haroon while talking to ‘The News’ late Thursday night.

“Senior Advisor to CM Zulfiqar Khosa, Chief Secretary Punjab Nasir Khosa and provincial health secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad were present at the CM’s office Thursday night who informed the YDA representatives that the CM would not meet them,” he added.

On Friday, Dr Haroon said that the YDA resumed strike in all departments of the hospitals from Friday morning while giving a deadline of Friday afternoon to the government for issuance of notification announcing pay raise for the young doctors. “The young doctors would go on complete strike from Friday evening in all departments of the hospitals including ICU and emergency if the government does not accept demands of the YDA,” he responded to a query.

He added that all the young doctors of the province have decided to submit their resignations to their relevant administrations by Friday evening.

The YDA has been demanding 100 per cent increase in salaries of young doctors, pay protection and increase in health budget of the province.

“We have collected resignations from all young doctors serving here in the three teaching hospitals of town which would be submitted to the administration till Friday evening,” said General Secretary YDA Rawalpindi Chapter Dr Abbas while talking to ‘The News’ Friday noon.

He added that with submission of resignations, the young doctors would withdraw their services from all departments including emergency, intensive care units, coronary care units, labour rooms and emergency operation theatres in hospitals across province.
